Next Gen Processor

The next processor from Intel boasts that it is the seventh generation right in its name.  The Core i7 is the new chip, originally codenamed “Nehalem,” that Intel will start mass-manufacturing in Quarter 4 of this year (2008), most likely coming in November.  Under a new socket size (1366 on the desktop), this new chip is much larger than its most recent cousin from the Core 2 line.  The size change comes from have the memory controller, also known as QuickPath Interconnect, being on the chip itself.  The new socket size also means that the motherboard will change.  Everything on the top of a mother board is rotated to the left 90 degrees.  The DIMM slots for RAM are placed at the top parallel to the top of the board.  The Northbridge chipset is now placed to the right of the socket, and the heatsink space is now humongous.  And with the announcement that Intel chipsets can now be licensed to run SLI across the Northbridge, these new motherboards/processors are gonna be a hit.
