Ubuntu on my Compaq C700 update
So, here’s what I’ve been able to learn over the course of my travels through the wonderful world of Ubuntu Linux on my new Compaq C700 laptop. So since my last update here’s whats happened:
- Video playback now works perfectly for The Office episodes and Friends episodes while in Compiz-Fusion. I don’t know what changed since the last time I tried it (an update maybe?), but now it gives me the freedom to do all of the extra plugins in Compiz including the Avant Window Navigator which needs a compositor to render it.
- Wireless is flawless now. The network configuration doesn’t really support the showing of the wireless/wired configurations, so I downloaded the software: Wifi-radar for the wireless, and most of the time I don’t need to look at the wired configuration to make sure it’s connected, but if I do I just use the command line.
- DVD Playback is also flawless except for the first disc of “Fellowship of the Ring.” I’ve played Batman Begins, Stranger Than Fiction, and most of the LOTR DVD discs.
Also, I should say that there’s only two things I can’t do with this computer.
- I can’t play iTunes store music because it is protected AAC content. This sucks. And for years now, Linux users have wanted a port of iTunes to Linux. It still hasn’t happened and there’s no appeasement in sight, unfortunately. It’s quite a shame because Mac OS X is based on a Unix environment.
- And no games. I’ve heard that the new Wine release can do Battlefield 2 pretty well, but with a lot of bugs. And there’s no way I’d ever get Call of Duty 4 to run on this machine, either.
