“Gutsy”

The ‘ol Gutsy Gibbon is running beautifully. Although most aren’t fans of the open source software, it can really be a breeze sometimes. Just pop open a terminal, type sudo apt-get install and you can get just about any free software you want, man.  So far, I’ve probably experienced more problems than the average Ubuntu user because my laptop is new and a lot of drivers haven’t been released for it yet.

  1. The Wireless card: apparently the built-in driver needs to be blacklisted and a previous driver version needs to be used for the BCM card.
  2. DVD playback: the DVD playback library installed fine and I can even run a few DVD’s already (watched Batman Begins tonight).  However, because it is still illegal to watch DVD’s on Ubuntu, there’s no good software solution for everything. Point in case: my Lord of the Rings discs will play the menus, but they have trouble with the playback itself.
  3. Compiz Desktop Effects: apparently you can’t make the desktop look fancy because the video driver is blacklisted by Compiz.  If you turn the blacklisting off and enable Compiz, you can’t play videos; all of them crash.

The things I can do are almost all inclusive.  I can edit code.  I can do spreadsheets, word docs, and other office stuff.  I can get my email the same way that MS Outlook can.  Drawback 1: No real games.  Apparently, you can install Battlefield 2 on Wine now, but I wasn’t successful.

It may not be the same thing, but it still beats the hell out of Vista.
