Remember, remember the 5th of November…
Such a great movie. If you haven’t seen “V for Vendetta” you are certainly missing out. I was going to post this on Nov. 5th, but I was a little late in doing that cause we started watching the movie at 11PM. So, without further ado, here’s the breakdown and why I like this movie.
Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) is an administrative aid working at BTN, Britain’s number one TV station since the world basically went to hell. America is in desolation, Britain is ruled by High Chancellor Sutler and his “cabinet”, and the rest of the world is now in chaos. When Evey is unexpectedly saved from some bad stray cops by a Guy Fawkes-masked man, the plot unfolds. Soon, Evey finds herself in the company of V (Hugo Weaving), who has vowed to take down the overzealous and dominating government of Britain using the very tactics of Guy Fawkes, whose plot involved the destruction of Parliament. V’s past is somewhat of a mystery which quickly comes to light as Inspector Finch (Stephen Rea) links high government officials, including Sutler, to a heinous virus that spread throughout the country and allowed its dictator to come to power. Filled with action and fantastic fight sequences, “V for Vendetta” chooses to remind us of the freedoms we take for granted and ultimately the power of the people’s say in our government.
So, you want my take on this movie? Well, if you didn’t catch it, the final line in the last paragraph was my opinion. The plot reminds us, though in an extreme (but possible) setting and time, that we can’t take our freedoms for granted. In a very aesthetic tone, V reminds us that “people should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.” You may only have a voice of one, but together we have the voices of thousands.
